Biography

 

Mary Beth Walker will lead Georgia State’s strategic efforts serving as the new associate provost for strategic initiatives and innovation. Prior to her appointment, she served as dean of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies and in a variety of teaching and leadership roles. In these positions, Dr. Walker has succeeded in increasing the volume of federally funded research grants awarded to the school, and integrating the departments of Social Work and Criminal Justice and Criminology into the Andrew Young School. She has been instrumental in expanding the focus of the AYS to include a broader range of public policy issues, guiding the college in the establishment of two additional academic departments and two additional research centers, almost doubling the size of the faculty.

Dr. Walker’s own area of expertise is applied econometrics and statistics; her research has spanned areas in education economics, public finance and health economics. In recent years, her focus has been on the evaluation of education policy. She is a graduate of Rhodes College (TN), with a B.A. in economics and mathematics, and holds a master’s degree and Ph. D. in economics from Rice University (TX).
